After many years of being one of the largest and most successful prides within the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, the Mhangeni Pride found themselves in trouble. Tragedy struck as dominant males fell, cubs were lost, and they fled from relentless threats. A looming fear gripped their existence and there were thoughts that this pride might fade away and never recover. However, with the pride now having 10 new cubs with the dominant males in the area, we are witnessing a resurgence in this pride, and the future is once again looking bright and breathing new life into their history. The Mhangeni Pride's journey began in 2010 when four young lionesses made a bold decision to break away from their original pride, the Tsalala Pride. Their patriarchs, the legendary Mapogo males, had been dethroned by the formidable Majingalanes, prompting the need for these young lionesses to seek safety elsewhere. Guided by their tailless grandmother, who had once had her tail bitten off by hyenas, they ventured into uncharted territories, far from the clutches of the Majingalane males.
